Individual, Family and Society : A Study of Arthur Miller's The Last Yankee and Broken Glass
Authors(1) :-Dr. Manju Srivastava Beginning in the 17th century, in the American colonies, American drama developed slowly. Written by Americans in the English language, the plays were intended for performance and were modelled on foreign subjects. Coming to the 20th century, beginning with the 1920s and especially the end of the second World War, it took over to social, political, cultural and economic issues deriving from the native experiences. Writing in the realist tradition of Henrik Ibsen, borrowing symbolist and expressionist techniques from Bertolt Brecht and others, Miller's writing shows his concern with the moral problems in our society, especially American society, leading him to probe into the psychological causes of behaviour. Based on the study of The Yankee and Broken Glass, the paper is an attempt to understand the complex social issues, pressures, conditions affecting the individual and the family.
