The plays of Mahesh Dattani primarily deals with middle class life in urban India. The plays are mostly based in Bangalore. They are peopled with Gujrati characters. The major issues Mahesh Dattani deals with are homosexuality, gender identity and construction, the pressure of the past, the hollowness of middle class life and the family as a battlefield.He uses all the resources of theatre at his command. The play is about disability and all that it causes in a certain social enviornment. It is about patriarchy and gender discrimination. It is about power play within the family. It is also about middle class morality. It depicts the pressure of the past . Patriarchy is a central theme in many of his plays.
