Role of Raktamokshan (leech therapy) in case of Deep Vein Thrombosis: Case Study

Introduction-Deep Vein Thrombosis is a vascular condition characterized by thrombus formation in the deep veins, commonly affecting the lower limbs. It presents with symptoms such as pain, swelling, tenderness, and discoloration. It commonly affects the deep leg veins (calf veins, popliteal vein) or the deep veins of the pelvis. It is a potentially dangerous condition that can lead to preventable morbidity and mortality. In Ayurveda, this condition can be correlated with Siragata Vata and Rakta Dushti, leading to obstruction in blood circulation. Material and methods- A 40-year-old female patient presented with complaints of pain, swelling, heaviness, and discoloration in the left lower limb for 10 days. Doppler ultrasonography confirmed the diagnosis of Deep Vein Thrombosis in the calf veins. He undergoes conservative treatment for his complaints but got no significant relief and condition further aggravated. The patient was treated with one sitting of leech therapy around the affected area. Supportive Ayurvedic management and lifestyle advice such as limb elevation and avoidance of prolonged sitting were also given.
Observation and Result- Significant improvement was observed in pain, swelling, and limb heaviness after therapy. The circumference of the affected limb was reduced and mobility improved. Raktamokshan therapy may be beneficial in relieving symptoms and improving venous circulation in patients of Deep Vein Thrombosis.
Conclusion-The therapy helped in improving circulation, reducing local inflammation, and restoring limb function, leading to better quality of life for the patient. Raktamokshan is an effective treatment for diseases caused by vitiated blood and local vascular congestion. Raktamokshan therapy may serve as a beneficial supportive approach in the management of Deep Vein Thrombosis, especially for symptomatic relief and improvement in local circulation.
